Sheltered construction for an iconic Stockholm structure

Wisdome, Stockholm Tekniska Museum

Project: Wisdome, Stockholm Tekniska Museum
Customer:  Stockholm Tekniska Museum

Contractor:  Oljibe Sweden

A visionary work of art both inside and out, the Wisdome at Stockholm’s Tekniska Museum was designed to highlight the use of wood in modern, sustainable architecture. The use of wood, however, meant that the unique building required unique protection from the Swedish climate during construction. Delivering a customised solution to shelter the worksite, Sitecover allowed construction to proceed as planned and helped ensure the striking new structure could be completed to perfection.

In 2022, Oljibe began work on an extraordinary wooden building at the Stockholm Tekniska Museum known as the Wisdome. Part of a new generation of timber structures, the 1,325 m² hall and theatre would showcase how wood can combine strength and sustainability as the main material in modern construction.

However, building with wood can be problematic, as moisture during construction can damage the timber and diminish the long-term strength of the structure. Given Stockholm’s climate, this issue was especially concerning for the Wisdome.

To ensure protection from the elements, Sitecover delivered an integrated cover and crane solution – combining full weather protection with a built-in crane system. The modular Sitecover structure covered the entire building, creating optimal working conditions throughout the project. This allowed Oljibe to transport and assemble the timber quicker, while also performing interior and exterior work at the same time without interruption due to weather.

By providing weather protection and efficient crane capacity in one seamless system, Sitecover helped Oljibe and the Tekniska Museum complete the visionary building on time – with the Wisdome opening to the public less than 2 years after construction began.

In addition to protecting the wood during construction, the weather protection has had a positive effect on the work environment. It has also facilitated transport and the assembly itself, as the trucks have been able to drive all the way into the tent to unload the material that is lifted into place using a traverse.
