In April 2024, a devastating fire severely damaged the historic stock exchange building in the heart of Copenhagen.
As one of Denmark’s most important cultural landmarks, reconstruction demanded the utmost care to protect what remained of the original structure and preserve the building’s heritage through the rebuilding process.
The site, however, presented unique challenges. What remained of the building’s exterior was extremely fragile, making it vulnerable to wind and precipitation. Moreover, the site’s proximity to government buildings and Copenhagen’s commercial centre made noise, dust and visual disruption through the lengthy reconstruction process a major issue.
This difficult situation made Sitecover ideal for the project. As a modular, self-supporting structure, Sitecover’s solution could be setup independent of the work structure – meaning it could ensure complete weather protection and an ideal working environment without risking damage to the fragile remaining walls.
The Sitecover roof over Børsen spans 57.6 meters in width, fully covering the 21-meter-wide building and providing ample space for storage, construction and safe movement for the crew and equipment. A single crane with a 12.5-ton lift capacity is built into the roof of the structure to streamline the construction operation and also eliminate the need for additional equipment in the constrained urban area.
In addition to the worksite, the structure covers the vehicular area of Slotsholmsgade and two lanes of Børsgade, ensuring all key access routes remain dry and operational. Even the cycle path on Børsgade is led safely through the covered area so to minimise transit disruption in the busy city centre.
With Sitecover’s solution, the delicate reconstruction of Copenhagen’s historic Stock Exchange is progressing safely and efficiently with an expected completion date set for some time in 2029.
